How Can Aromatherapy Improve My Sleep?

The benefits of using aromatherapy for sleep

Sleep is one of the most important foundations of good health - yet many of us struggle to switch off at the end of the day. Racing thoughts, stress from work or family life, and the general pace of modern living can make it surprisingly hard to wind down.

Aromatherapy offers a gentle, natural way to help the body and mind relax before bed. Used thoughtfully, essential oils can create a calming bedtime ritual that signals to your brain that it’s time to rest.

Over the years of creating aromatherapy products for College Green, I’ve seen just how powerful that ritual can be.

My first experience with aromatherapy and sleep

My introduction to aromatherapy and sleep actually came 25 years ago when my son was born. A cousin gave me a small bottle of lavender essential oil with simple instructions: add a few drops to the bath and use it to relax.

She knew that with a newborn baby, a perfect night’s sleep wasn’t realistic - but being able to relax properly would help me cope with the inevitable broken nights.

It worked.

Years later, when I began making bath products using essential oils, I started researching the properties of different oils more deeply. Because I tended to bathe in the evening, it felt natural to explore blends that worked particularly well at night - oils that encourage relaxation and help prepare the body for sleep.

That research eventually led to the creation of my Sleep Easy blend.

Why aromatherapy can help with sleep

One of the biggest benefits of aromatherapy is that scent works directly with the part of the brain connected to emotion, memory and relaxation.

Certain essential oils are known for their calming properties. When you smell them, they can help shift the body away from a stressed, alert state and towards a more restful one.

Just as importantly, aromatherapy works through association and routine.

When you use the same calming scent regularly at bedtime, your brain begins to recognise it as a signal that it’s time to relax. Over time, simply smelling that blend can start to trigger the body’s natural wind-down response.

The importance of a well-balanced blend

Creating an effective sleep blend isn’t just about choosing relaxing oils. It’s also about how those oils are combined.

Perfumers - and aromatherapists - work with three layers of scent:

  • Top notes – the first scent you notice, but the quickest to fade
  • Middle notes – the heart of the blend that lasts longer
  • Base notes – the deeper oils that linger the longest

Using a balance of these ensures the scent doesn’t disappear too quickly. A properly structured blend can continue to be noticeable even if you wake during the night.

The oils themselves matter too. Some are known for their deeply relaxing qualities, so selecting oils that complement each other both aromatically and therapeutically is key.

Essential oils that work beautifully for sleep

In my experience, lavender remains the most trusted oil for sleep.

Customers tell me time and again that lavender is their favourite. Part of that is its natural relaxing properties, but I believe familiarity plays a role too. When we repeatedly smell the same calming scent at bedtime, it becomes part of a comforting nightly pattern.

In my Sleep Easy blend, lavender is paired with other oils that enhance relaxation, including:

  • Neroli – beautifully calming and emotionally soothing
  • Chamomile – gentle and relaxing
  • Patchouli – a grounding base note that helps the scent last

Together they create a scent that feels soft, comforting and balanced.

What customers say about aromatherapy and sleep

One of the most rewarding parts of creating aromatherapy products is hearing how people use them in their everyday lives.

Customers often tell me they’ve tried several sleep products before finding one that works for them.

A few things I hear regularly are:

  • they fall asleep faster
  • their mind feels calmer at bedtime
  • they wake less often during the night

One comment that always makes me smile came from my uncle. At the age of 95 he said he still wakes occasionally during the night - but far less frequently when he uses Sleep Easy.

Small improvements like that can make a real difference to how rested you feel.

My own aromatherapy bedtime routine

Even after years of working with essential oils, I’m still pleasantly surprised by how effective a warm aromatherapy bath before bed can be.

Most evenings I start winding down by lighting a candle in the lounge an hour or two before bed. The soft light and gentle scent help signal that the day is coming to an end.

When I go to bed, I spray a little natural aromatherapy pillow spray for sleep high above the bed so it settles onto the pillow and duvet.

If my mind is still racing, I'll spend a few minutes doing a simple breathwork exercise which calms my mind, reduces my heart rate and even lowers my blood pressure.

I also keep a reed diffuser beside my bed. If I wake during the night I can smell it clearly - and it’s such a lovely scent that (don’t laugh) - it makes me smile internally. That sense of calm and comfort often helps me drift back to sleep again.

Why I offer different ways to use sleep aromatherapy

Everyone has their own way of relaxing in the evening, so I like to offer several ways to enjoy a sleep blend.

  • Candles are lovely for creating a soft evening atmosphere, although they work best when burned for a couple of hours.
  • Reed diffusers provide a constant, subtle scent — perfect for a bedside table.
  • Pillow sprays are incredibly versatile and can be used not only on bedding but also on clothing, scarves or pyjamas.
  • Bath soaks can turn a simple bath into a deeply relaxing ritual.

Personally, I love spraying Sleep Easy onto a scarf or pyjama top. The scent stays with you in a very gentle way.

The sleep problems people most often talk about

When customers ask about sleep aromatherapy, the same challenges come up again and again:

  • racing thoughts at bedtime
  • difficulty switching off after a busy day
  • waking during the night

Aromatherapy doesn’t force you to sleep - and it shouldn’t. Instead, it creates the conditions for sleep by helping your body and mind relax.

Three simple ways to try aromatherapy for sleep tonight

If you’d like to try using aromatherapy for sleep, here are three simple tips.

1. Use a balanced blend
Choose oils that include top, middle and base notes so the scent lasts longer.

2. Select relaxing oils
Lavender, neroli, chamomile and patchouli are all known for their calming qualities.

3. Create a routine
Use the same scent each night so your brain begins to associate it with rest and relaxation.

A gentle way to support better sleep

Aromatherapy isn’t about instant results or dramatic fixes. Its strength lies in small, consistent rituals that help your body slow down and unwind.

Over time, that simple moment of calm at the end of the day can make all the difference.

And sometimes, all it takes is a beautiful scent and a few quiet minutes to remind your mind that it’s safe to rest.
